Every year, more addicts suffer at the hands of a system that punishes victims of addiction, and fails to provide treatments that break the cycle. A group that suffers greatly from addiction are artists, who often share a sensitivity to life that makes them more vulnerable.

Artists For Addicts is a platform for stories and art, and a safe place to explore this difficult subject in creative ways. If you are someone who has used the power of art to heal from addiction, stay in recovery, or support a loved one, you belong here, and we would love to hear from you. You can share your story and your art at http://www.Facebook.com/ArtistsForAddicts.

About The Film

A BLACK STAR is a star that shines so brightly, it burns out and dies, but leaves its mass behind. The Black Star film chronicles Jon Butcher's channeling of an art piece that represents 80 artists the world has lost. Through this process, Jon not only explores the relationship between art and addiction, but experiences a powerful transformation of his own. Black Star is a tribute to the artists we've lost to addiction and a call for each of us to help those who are currently struggling.

Former addict Joe Polish came up with the idea for Artists For Addicts when he realized that artists and the arts may have many of the answers we are seeking for this crisis. When Joe approached artist Jon Butcher with this idea to use “art as a force for good,” it resonated deeply. Jon created the first art piece for Artists For Addicts, Black Star. That set the stage for other artists to follow his lead.

The result is Black Star, a tribute to the artists we've lost to addiction and a call for each of us to help those who are currently struggling.

Black Star was the winner of Audience Choice Award for best short film at the 2018 Illuminate Film Festival. The film was directed by Akira Chan and Renee Airya of RARE Media, and produced by Joe Polish and Jon Butcher. For full credits, please visit imdb
